Remote work has skyrocketed since 2020 due to COVID-19. Despite numerous employees working remotely as a safety precaution, many hope to continue remote work when the pandemic is over.  According to the 2021 State of Remote Work “45 percent of remote workers are working remotely because of COVID-19” and “46 percent of remote workers say their company is planning on allowing remote work permanently”.

All jobs can’t be completed remotely, but we know every industry is utilizing virtual work in some capacity. From CEO’s, managers, and employees, each person in a company should know how to ensure they are using the correct cyber security practices while working remotely.  In this blog post, we are going to discuss strategies your company can use to maintain cyber security for your remote workers.

What is Cyber Security?

According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, cyber security is:

“Prevention of damage to, protection of, and restoration of computers, electronic communications systems, electronic communications services, wire communication, and electronic communication, including information contained therein, to ensure its availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and nonrepudiation”.

In order to protect a company and its information, every employee should have knowledge that helps them protect their cyber security.   With these tips, you will learn the key practices remote workers should use to stay safe while working virtually!

Establish and Review Cyber security Plans

Many employees are working at home for the first time in their careers. This can be a major adjustment for managers and employees alike. The most effective cyber security plan involves prevention. The Society for Human Resource Management recommends “Setting up and communicating remote-work security policies”.

As technology advances, companies and organizations should make sure their cyber security plans are up to date. If you or someone in your company is concerned about your cyber security, plan, it is best to have a conversation with your IT department.

Use Company Software and Equipment

There are times when work/life balance can be difficult for remote workers. However, it is essential for every employee. When employees are working remotely, it is smart for them to use company software and company equipment when possible. According to The Society of Human Resource Management “Regulating personal-device use” is another useful way to protect your company.

This is recommended because it makes it easier for companies to know which security suites are being used and the best methods to protect their information.  There are times when it may be easier for an employee to use their personal devices, but this decision could jeopardize your company’s security. If your company is concerned about potential risks, it would be wise to supply all employees with the equipment they need to work virtually. This choice can give all employees the assurance they need.

Avoid Phishing Attacks

Another cyber security concern employees should be on the lookout for are potential phishing attacks. The Society of Human Resource Management warns “Be alert against phishing tactics in phony emails”. Over the years, phishing attacks have become more creative and hackers often try to exploit a person’s compassion. Each employee should be aware of any emails and communications asking for money or information if the circumstance seems odd regardless of the email address it is sent from. If an employee notices a phishing attack, it is advised they contact the IT department at your company.

These are key cyber security strategies employees at your company can use to protect themselves and the company while working remotely. When you implement these strategies, everyone at your company can feel comfortable knowing their work and information is protected.
